Governors
What do governors do?
- promote high standards of educational attainment
- set targets for pupil achievement
- take general responsibility for the conduct of the school
- manage the school's budget, including deciding how many staff will work there and their pay
- make sure that the curriculum is balanced and broadly based, in particular that the National Curriculum and religious education are taught, and report on pupils' achievement in National Curriculum assessments and examination results.
- participate in the appointment of senior staff (including appointing the head teacher) and regulate staff conduct and discipline; and
- draw up an action plan after an inspection by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)
Why do schools need governors?
Every school has a Governing Body to represent the public in the running of schools. School Governors bring perspectives from ordinary life and work with the staff and the Local Authority (LA) to help secure the best possible education for the children in the school. They have important responsibilities like managing the school budget, overseeing the curriculum and appointing staff.

I am a parent governor, with children in Reception and Year 2. I currently work part-time, as a lecturer in public health. I believe that our schools should provide a fair start in life for everyone. I have lived in Knowle for 9 years and am committed to supporting our local school. |

I am a dentist at Broadwalk and have lived in Knowle for 18 years. I have two children aged 12 and 9. |

Hello. My daughter is currently in Year 1 of Knowle Park Primary and very happy at school. I am a primary teacher by training, but have worked within PE and School Sport for the past ten years. I am currently the School Sports Partnership Manager for North Somerset Council, providing opportunities for pupils to participate in competitive sport. As well as hopefully being able to share my experience and knowledge within education (as appropriate), I would like to be able to support the school, staff and pupils in providing the best possible provision across all aspects of school life.

I am a new parent governor and have twin girls in Reception. I am also a teacher, currently teaching year 5. I have an Early Years background and have taught every year group, so I have a clear understanding of the curriculum throughout a school. I am passionate about child led learning, focussing on children’s interests so they are confident, motivated, enthusiastic and independent learners.

I have lived in the local area all my life and have a comprehensive knowledge of Knowle. I attended Knowle Park on the 1950s. My sons attended during the 1970s and my Granddaughters currently attend. My carreer background is financial services and I am now retired. I believe my background gives me a good grounding in my role as a Knowle Park Primary School governor.

I am one of two councillors for the Knowle ward of Bristol City Council. One of the main reasons I am a Governor is to make sure that the school gets fair treatment from the council. I also want to help to foster good communication between the school and the rest of the community.

I have worked at Knowle Park for 7 years an LSA. Studies outside of work have enabled me to apply for and successfully gain a place on the Graduate Teacher Programme. I really enjoy working with children and sharing memorable moments with them. It's a challenging, exiting and fullfilling role. |
