Intent

At Knowle Park, we recognise the benefits of learning a foreign language and how this can deepen the children’s understanding of the world.

We provide stimulating and enjoyable Spanish lessons with opportunities for the children to learn more about their own culture and other cultures. When teaching Spanish, we enable children to grow in confidence in communication and oracy skills and promote learning from each other and learning from mistakes.

In lessons, children have opportunities to listen, speak and write in Spanish and we make cross-curricular links where possible. We believe that a firm grounding in Spanish will allow pupils at Knowle Park to feel the confidence and desire to learn other languages later in life.

Implementation

At Knowle Park, we use Language Angels to teach our children (from year 3 to year 6) Spanish. 

The curriculum is structured in units, separated into three teaching types:  

• Early Language
• Intermediate
• Progressive 

Each unit offers the opportunity to explore the following areas of the language’s curriculum.

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

Progression occurs in each of the key skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar within and

across each teaching type and unit, as exemplified in the progression document. With support from Language Angels, we have carefully allocated units to year groups based on our assessment of children’s prior language learning.

Language Angels also contains supplementary units focused on Key Vocabulary, which we use to support embedding the language in classrooms, even if the discrete lessons are not taught by the class teacher and grammar, which can support adult subject knowledge and, in particular, stretch and challenge our most high-attaining learners.

Although some vocabulary is recapped across topics, most units present new language learning, though Key Vocabulary and sentence structures will be revisited.

Impact

The children at KPPS will:

• Demonstrate a positive attitude towards people from Spanish speaking cultures, and show an open attitude to cultures different from their own.
• Demonstrate respectful behaviour to all and this is transferable outside of school in the wider community and beyond.
• Use communication skills as a gateway to develop an understanding of other cultures.
• Examine how the structure of another language links and compares to my own.
• Be more confident to learn other languages and not be afraid to make mistakes.
