Ekphrastic Fantastic!

“Poetry is emotion put into measure. The emotion must come by nature, but the measure can be acquired by art.” Thomas Hardy

To enter the KPPS Poetry Competition - write an ekphrastic poem (say ek-fras-tic)

Watch Lenny the Dog have a go

What is an ekphrastic poem?

It’s when someone looks at a piece of art they can see – like a painting or a sculpture – then writes a poem about how it makes them feel and what it makes them think about.

How can I write an ekphrastic poem?

  • First find some art you can see – it can be a painting or a drawing you find on the Internet or at home.  Click HERE for some ideas.
  •
  • Next click HERE to look at some examples of some good ekphrastic poems.
  •
  • Then click HERE to get some help on how to write your poem.

How long does my poem have to be?

Poems must be between 8 and 30 lines excluding the title.

Do I have to send a copy of the picture that has inspired the poem?

You do not have to send the image with the poem. An ekphrastic poem should stand alone.

Does the title of my poem have to be the same as that of the picture?

The title of the poem can be the same as the picture, or it can be different - your own idea.

Where shall I send my poem?

Send it poetry@knowlepark-pri.bristol.sch.uk

When is the deadline?

All entries must be sent on or before Monday 25th May 2020.

Is there a prize?

There will be four winners— YR, KS1, KS2 and an overall winner. All four poets will receive a book and the opportunity to have their poem made into a Film Poem.

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY WRITING!!!
