Kind, Inspiring, Together, Excelling

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language. Teaching children to blend the sounds of letters together helps them decode unfamiliar or unknown words by sounding them out.

At Knowle Park, we follow the Letters and Sounds Programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills which consists of six phases.

Phonics is taught daily for 30 minutes in the morning, from Reception to Year Two. We use Bug Club and our own Interactive Whiteboard Resources to support the Letters and Sounds Programme.

Key stage one children can read online ebooks through our Bug Club subscription. Check with your child’s class teacher for their login details.

At the end of Year 1, it is a requirement that all children complete a phonics screening assessment. They are required to read 40 words that consist of real words and ‘alien’ words. There will be a phonics meeting for Year 1 parents to give you more information.
